About Us

Samuel Ogunbiyi Foundation

The Foundation is in memory of late Pa Samuel Ojo Ogunbiyi, 1882-1967. Without formal education, Pa Ogunbiyi left his homeland, Obbo-Aiyegunle in Ekiti LocalGovernmentof Kwara State, for Lagos in early 1900. As a young adult, on seeing the value of education, he was motivated to be home-schooled and self-educated. This provided him with the opportunity to work briefly for the then Governor-General of Nigeria, Sir (Lord) Frederick Lugard who later recommended him to the Nigerian Railway Corporation where he worked for over 35 years.

Pa Ogunbiyi valued education and strongly advocated it at every available opportunity. As a result, our late father, Mr. Dada Ogunbiyi (aka Blackie Power), the first male child in the family, graduated from Eko Boys High School in the early 1940s. He was later followed by others including Professor Peter Ogunbiyi, currently resident in the USA. The entire family jubilantly and with great fanfare escorted our late uncle, Mr. Peter Yemi Olowa, to then Lagos Airport, Ikeja (now Murtala Muhammed International Airport) on his way to the University of Exeter, Exeter, United Kingdom in 1961. So far, the relentless pursuit of education continues.

The pursuit of education at various levels is the legacy of Pa Samuel Ogunbiyi. This Foundation honors his memory and plans to extend his kindness and love of education forwards to the coming generations.
